Sailing in Barbados

Over Thanksgiving we packed our swimsuits and sandals and headed south to the Caribbean. Greg and I started the trip by taking a few days just the two of us to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary on the beautiful island of St. Lucia (more here and here) and then island hopped over to Barbados to spend the holiday with family. It was our second Thanksgiving in a row in the Caribbean, as the year before we were on our honeymoon, and while sushi isn't traditional by any means, we're growing quite fond of a tropical setting for the holiday!

We were in Barbados a couple months prior to visit Greg's parents and really got a sense of the island and culture with day trips sightseeing (my favorite) and eating at some wonderful restaurants full of local flavor. This time around we took things much slower by relaxing at the beach and spending hours in and near the water. In full laid-back island mode, we hit the sea for an afternoon of sailing on a beautiful catamaran, which was a highlight of the trip for everyone!

I wasn't sure what to expect from the day, but as soon as I stepped on deck was impressed by the attention to detail and friendly staff who went above and beyond to make our sail so memorable. We headed down the coast taking in the beautiful scenery and eventually anchored to swim with the sea turtles, which was so cool! We had a delicious dinner prepared on-board and finished the evening with some night fishing and jumped in for one last swim. Something about swimming in the warm sea at night with the stars shining above is absolutely magical and made for the perfect ending to the day!

I'm a sucker for a blue and white color combo, as well as anything striped, as it's so classic and perfect for a day on the water. I fell in love with this Cabana Life cover-up when I saw it- especially the fun zipper detail!- and having already spent numerous days in the sun, love that it provided 50+ UV protection. Being lightweight and breathable, I didn't get too hot and the rash-guard material was great for the water (sold out but similar here and here).

If you're tall like me, finding one pieces that are long enough can be quite the challenge, which is a shame since there are so many cute styles out right now! J.Crew offers a selection of their suits in "long torso" and the gingham suit I'm wearing also now comes in this adorable ruffle bandeau or off-the-shoulder version, as well as a classic bikini. So hard to choose! More options in this adorable print below.
